Compare and contrast one biomedical and one individual approach to treatment. (1 hour essay)

You need to know treatments!!!  Here you can identify a type of treatment and explain related to different disorders - PTSD, depression, bulimia.  You must discuss 1 biomedical and 1 individual approach - but relate them to as many disorders as you can to support your answer.  How would you answer this?

drug therapy v. CBT (cognitive-behavorial therapy)

Biomedical treatments: principle is that it is possible to help people suffering from biological malfunction by using drugs
one type of biomedical treatment: SSRI's (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors).
-how do they work?? increase the level of available serotonin by preventing it from being taken in synaptic gaps
-side affects: vomiting, insomnia, headaches
-what is it used for? depression, mood disorders
-not always equally affective, depends on the individual (similar to theory)

cbt (individual approach to treamtent)
-aaron beck
-form of psychotherapy used primarily to treat someone with depression
-CBT focuses on symptoms
-12 to 20 weekly sessions which include of daily exercises
principle= first identify faulty thinking, seconds, encourage people to gradually increase activities which could result in being rewarding or increasing self-confidence
-help patient with coping strategies and problem solving skills and different ways to think

Riggs et al (2007)
-combination of treatment with placebo+CBT and CBT+ssri's for 126 participants suffering from depression
-double blind study (doctors did not known what type of treatment patients received when they judged whether patient's improved or not)
-found 76% were judged as very much improved with CBT+ssri's and 67% found very much improved with CBT+placebo.
-why is this important? shows that CBT and ssri's together is beneficial

Elkin et al (1989)
-one of largest control experiments on depression using 20 physicians and 290 patients with diagnosed severe depression.
-individuals were treated with either drug therapy, cbt, or control group was given placebo pill
-results: 50% of patients recovered in cbt group and 50% recovered in drug therapy group, only 29% in placebo group
-what does this mean??? treatments (not including placebo) had relatively same result
